Review of
You’re Never Weird On The Internet (Almost) by F. Day
A long long time ago, when I was young and silly, now I’ m just silly, I decided to do a reading challenge. Which I failed gloriously but for some reason accepted a bet from a friend, who also is quite a reading addict. I might just tell you about that some time.
All things aside, the important thing is that sme really interesting books came into my radar. I must confess that I’m rather picky wen it comes to choosing a non-fiction book but this one drew me in for some reason. This book was a great kick in my oh so lazy self as a reminder to NEVER JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER (or in this case its genre). Boy was I in for a ride with this one… Honestly.
Don’t get me wrong the book is fantastic, but my brain that was spiralling in the deep dark pits without the possibility of seeing light, I was sceptic of everything, expected the worst in order not to be disappointed and just a dark person in general. Once again I was breaking my rules in the beginning and imagining what the book is about without reading it. This one has quite a chunk of it about geeks, gamers and gaming. Things that are still so far out of my comfort zone. But giving myself a swift shove to stop getting ahead of myself and deciding before finishing I kept reading and was wonderfully, pleasantly surprised and in the end elated that Felicia Day’s funny and quirky book landed in my hands. She beautifully leads the reader through various stages of her life, creativity and is not afraid to say it as it is. She doesn’t paint herself to be this hero, leader or inspirational Dalai Llama of gaming, self-employment and success (however she could be one) but writes the honest and unedited truth about the emotions everyone goes through in their life at various points. That part got to me in my dark state of mind at that time.
What else is incredibly fun and eye opening to read about in her memoir is that it feels real. Like you are just having a conversation with the author. It’s light, fun, she has a great sense of humour and even though I’m a little embarassed and ashamed to admit that I haven’t known any of her work before just heard of a Felicia Day, this book makes me want to just meet her in person. That’s how awesome she seems to me now (major fan worship going on here right now).
However, honestly speaking I can definitely say that it really felt like having a great conversation with the author herself about life, deep dark fears, feelings, and valuable life lessons when reading this book with a lovely healthy dose of humour and real talk mixed together.
So, for anyone who is still doubting if this book is worth time, attention, or a place on your shelf or kindle, then listen to a previously sceptical me. IT IS! Always open up to new experiences no matter what your previous misconceptions are. This book made me feel relieved that there are people who feel similar to me, have all kinds of life experiences, and so on. Yet it left me happy by knowing that if I put my mind to it, I am able to achieve goals while still managing to procrastinate and have mini panic attacks while having an intense argument out loud with myself.
Have an exciting reading,
Munching Bookworm
